The Production Process

The Process Model

How do you get to somewhere new if you don't have a map to get there? That's pretty much what the process model is. Metaphorically, it's a map that details all the paths, landmarks and points of destination along the road to completing the production of any media project. Website, video production, poster design, radio ad - all of them.

Apply the process and you can't go wrong

Anyone whos ever worked on a project before knows that the best way to accomplish goals is to follow a plan. This way you're always guaranteed to get exactly what you wanted in the first place. No surprises. The way business should be. Below, is a typical process model by which we manage every project big or small.

Step One
One on one or as a group, we brainstorm with our client to establish the basic concept, scripting ideas, design elements and so on. Write it up and agree to move to the next step. Here, you might get a ball park figure or at least a few boundaries on the pricing.

Step Two

Finalize the written script in terms of visuals, graphic elements, narration, music, sound effects and content. Write it up and agree to move to the next step.

Step Three
This phase includes all of the actual production and creation work of the individual parts involved in bring life to the project on which ever media type the project is based.

Step Four
Now we take all the components and create the first draft copy. This is where everyone, including the client(s) get an aportunity to scrutinize the work and to determine what changes are desired. This is a crucial point in the process because it is typically the last point at which and big changes can be made without undoing a great deal of work at the end. Once everyone is pleased with the draft the final draft is created. Write it up and move to the final step.

Step Five
The final stage is simply when you, the client receive delivery of your final product in the form of a DVD or CD backup or uploaded directly to a video server of your choice.

A little about pricing
There's basically two ways to buy a video production; a 'package price' and a 'hourly price'. The first being the most common arrangement. A package price allows the client to know exactly what to budget for and the production company know what they have to work with. It's best for both parties to have every detail of the project written down clearly before the dotten line is signed.
The other common arrangment is charged by the day, half day or by the hour. These rates vary between production companies. The advantages here are that the client is only paying for the actual time the project is being worked on. The client may be providing some of the services involved themselves. The down side to this is that the overall project may end up costing more.

Rule of thumb
  • a professional video will cost between $800 and $1500 dollars per finished minuted of video depending on the complexity of production and post production.
